Optimal planogram for standard snack machines
How to arrange your coils to maximize sales and minimize stale products.
The Golden Rule: Eye level is buy level
The top two rows of your snack machine should always contain your highest-margin, best-selling products. This is typically where you place premium chips, large chocolate bars, and popular pastries.
Row Layout Strategy
- Top Row (Large Coils): Premium chips (Doritos, Cheetos, Lay's). Keep the most popular flavors in the center.
- Second Row (Large Coils): Pastries, honey buns, Pop-Tarts, and secondary chip flavors.
- Third Row (Standard Coils): Chocolate bars (Snickers, M&M's, Reese's) and premium cookies.
- Fourth Row (Standard Coils): Crackers (Cheez-Its, PB crackers), fruit snacks, and secondary candy.
- Bottom Row (Small Coils): Gum, mints, and heavy/dense items. Heavy items drop better from the bottom to prevent them from crushing lighter items or getting stuck.
Managing Expiration Dates
Always practice FIFO (First In, First Out). When restocking, remove the older product, place the new product in the back of the coil, and put the older product in the front. This is crucial for pastries and chocolate, which have shorter shelf lives.
Adjusting for the Location
A standard planogram is just a starting point. If you notice an item isn't selling after 30 days, swap it out. If a specific chip flavor sells out in two days, double-face it (use two coils for the same product) to prevent empty slots.
